A new material for the Handpan - Ein neues Material für die Handpan

I am happy to present you today the first LUNA "Silvermoon" made of nickel silver.

The constant further development of the LUNA Handpan also includes the testing of new materials in cooperation and collaboration with my metal turning shop in Germany.

This time it is a very special and for Handpan rather unusual material, namely nickel silver.

Nickel silver is a copper nickel zinc alloy.

The special thing about Handpan construction is that copper alloys are usually much softer than steel - including nickel silver.

If hardness was the only determining factor, nickel-silver would not be able to build a beautiful instrument and, above all, a tuning stable instrument.

However, there are other factors that play a role - one of the most important is that of work hardening.

This is much higher with nickel silver than with typical carbon steel or stainless steel. In other words: the more you deform nickel silver under the hammer, the harder and stiffer it becomes. At a certain point, this stiffness can even exceed that of steel.

This is essential for a proper tuning of the tone fields of the Handpan and also has a significant influence on crosstalking, i.e. stimulation between adjacent tone fields.


The tuning stability of nickel silver is at least the same as that of stainless steel when used correctly. Due to the greater mass of nickel silver compared to stainless steel and other factors, the sound of nickel silver differs significantly from that of a stainless steel instrument.


In general, the sounds last a little longer, and the overall sound can be described as more "inwardly directed" and warmer than the much more "radiant" sound of stainless steel hand pans - but listen for yourself:

Zur konstanten Weiterentwicklung der LUNA Handpan gehört auch immer wieder das Ausprobieren neuer Materialien in Kooperation und Zusammenarbeit mit meiner Metalldreherei in Deutschland.

Dieses mal handelt es sich dabei um ein ganz besonderes und für Handpan eher ungewöhnliches Material, nämlich um Neusilber.

Neusilber ist eine Kupfer Nickel Zink Legierung.

Das Besondere dabei für den Handpan-Bau ist: Kupfer Legierungen sind in der Regel deutlich weicher als Stahl - so auch Neusilber.

Wäre die Härte der einyige bestimmende Faktor, liese sich aus Neusibler kein schönes Instrument und vor allem auch kein stimmstabiles bauen.

Allerdings gibt es noch weitere Faktoren, die eine Rolle spielen - einer der wichtigsten dabei ist derjenige der Artbeitshärtung.

Diese liegt bei Neusilber deutlich höher als bei typischem Kohlenstoffstahl, oder auch Edelstahl. In anderern Worten: Je mehr man Neusilber unter dem Hammer deformiert, desto Härter und steifer wird es. Diese Steifigkeit kann ab einem bestimmten Punkt sogar diejenige von Stahl übertreffen.

Das ist für ein ordentliches Einstimmen der Tonfelder der Handpan ganz wesentlich und nimmt auch deutlichen Einfluss auf Crosstalking, sprich Anregung zwischen benachbarten Tonfeldern.

Die Stimmstabilität von Neusilber entspricht bei korrekter Handhabung mindestens der von Edelstahl. Durch die größere Masse von Neusilber im Vergleich zu Edelstahl, und aufgrund weiterer Faktoren, unterscheidet sich der Klang von Neusilber aber deutlich von dem eines Edelstahlinstruments.

Generell alten die Klänge nochmal etwas länger an, und der Gesammtklang lässt sich als eher nach "innen gerichtet" und wärmer beschreiben, als der deutlich "strahlendere" Klang der Edelstahl-Handpans - aber höre selbst :
